Last year nearly 150 geocachers showed up for lunch in Moonshine, Illinois.
On August 30th 2008, we’re coming back!
Moonshine is an experience like no other. Tucked away deep in the heart of Illinois, this wide spot in the road with a population of 2 continues to attract attention from all over the world. People come from miles around just to get a moonburger.I placed a geocache at Moonshine in 2002 to bring geocachers to this special spot, but requests kept coming over the years to hold an event there. After the success of the first event a second was inevitable and the excitement is growing!
Mark your calendars for August 30th, 2008 forMoonshine II ! We will start showing up at 9:00 am and will stick around until Helen kicks us out. Just remember, Helen shuts the grill off at 12:30, so get here early if you want the best hamburger you’ve ever had!
Please be sure to visit the registration page. This will give us an idea of how many to expect and you’ll be able to receive a personalized nametag and a few other items. Check back here often for other announcement and more information about the event.
After Moonshine II, enjoy a great day of caching and then head east to Terre Haute for Moonshine Hangover!!!
Terre Haute is about an hour to the east of Moonshine and has a lot of great caches. You can find quick drive by's as well as some very challenging puzzles and beautiful hikes. Fowler Park itself is home to some of the nicest hiking caches I've found in the area and one of Indiana's oldest caches! It will be a great place for you to work off that moonburger in the afternoon!
If you're planning on camping or staying at a hotel Saturday night you might want to look in the Terre Haute area. Check the camping and lodging page for more information.
August 29th marks the beginning of Labor Day weekend and the unofficial end of summer. Lots of people will be traveling and camping during this time, so hotels and campsites may be in high demand. If you're planning on coming to Moonshine get your reservations in early!
For those of you who may be traveling long distances to this event, here is a list of campsites and hotels in the Moonshine area.
A trip to Moonshine is likely to cause a bit of culture shock for many visitors. For that reason, here's a handly list of a few things to remember when you make the trip:
If you want a moonburger, get there before 12:30! Helen shuts the grill off promptly at half past noon!
Cash is king at Moonshine. If you want a burger or a souvenir, they don't take credit cards.
If you've ever told your kids or grandkids about those amazing little general stores that used to exist, you'll want to bring them to Moonshine so they can see what they're really like.
Oh, and public restrooms are available at Moonshine. They're across the road just to the side of the parking lot. Enjoy your visit to Sitty Hall.
